iMix miniLP is his first solo outing under the Atom TM guise since 1996, not to mention his first album for Ryo and Miho's Berlin-based Laboratory Instinct. Presented in his inimitable and unique Atom style, Schmidt brings da funk on the rocking dance-club outing iMix miniLP. Over the course of seven sample-heavy tracks, Schmidt distills stylistic traces of his various aliases - Señor Coconut's spicy rumbas, Flanger's mutant space jazz, and Geeez'n'Gosh's spindly click-hop-into lush slices of sexy acid funk.

This is the second release on Staalplaat's atmospheric music imprint 'Container Music'. We are proud to present two of Germany's most interesting and talented music makers. Both of these musicians have a background in techno, house, ambient and serious avant-garde music.
"micropossessed" is a project conceived by the frankfurt based musicians "Eyephone" and "Atom Heart", both known for their works in the field of electronic sound.
"Eyephone" is known for his releases "Reductive" (CD album 1995), "Evergreens" (CD album 1996) and "Greenhouse e.p." (12inch 1996) (all on Hypnotism) and Atom Heart who released material under many diferent projects since 1990 ("pure function" & "larger than life", 12"s 1993 on After 6am), "atom heart and pink elin live (1993 on Rising High). "Morphogenetic Fields (CD 1994 on Rough Trade) and "Shellglove" (CD 1996 on Recent Programmings).
Got together in the summer of 1995 to start on their collaboration project entitled "micropossessed". The music was layered in various sessions and completed one year later, in the summer of 1996. The basic for sound generation consists of audio feedback made by M. Behrens between 1990 and 1995. This material was then re-sampled and digitally modified to enhance its specific microrhythmic qualities. Those highly abstract audio textures were composed to create different atmospheres ranging from reduced rhythmic ambient via elaborated funkyness of the percussive "micropossessed" cracks to the cyclic interferences of "microcycled" which is the coda to the entire composition. The concept used in the processing of the audio material was adapted for the manipulation of several video screenshots. Parts of these low resolution image files were magnified and used as cover artwork to reveal their microstructures. Both, the music and visuals cohere to form this conceptual masterpiece.

"Superficial Depth is a new name chosen by Uwe Schmidt, who we of course know as the busiest bee buzzing around with Lassigue Benthaus, Atom Heart, Lisa Carbon Trio and many more. His discography grew skyhigh in only a few years. Recentely he moved to Chile, but I doubt that he is cut off from doing exciting music. In a way this new side project is just too perfect: the music, one long track of just under 70 minutes, seems like suited very well for a release on a label such as Side Effects. If ever Side Effects needed a perfect example of what the label stands for, Superficial Depth is it. Waving tones of synths and samples (no melody heard however) of superb dark ambience, rumbling of percussive sounds in the background, anything that is not static but constantely shifting in tone and colour makes this a perfect listening when you turn off all your lights at night. Dark ambient indeed." * Frans De Waard (Vital Weekly)
