after several releases by artists of the collective around raster-noton on american label line, a long-outstanding invitation was issued into the opposite direction. so last but not least the present release is an expression of long-lasting artistic ties between both labels.
in the greyness heavy waves begin to glide into the one-hour work. they swell and flood a vacuum. chartier is able to intensify this maelstrom in long and graceful moves. in a majestic and subtle manner he creates a subsonic vastness, capturing the listener, disconnecting him from the irrelevant reality. the end mirrors the beginning - revealing the idea of an endless space in an endless composition. finally incidence is a sound stream seeking to transform time into a certain timelessness.
richard chartier runs the label line, following the traditions of trente oiseaux by focusing on minimalist and not beat-oriented sound experiments. his compositions often test the limits of auditory perceptibility. in this way chartier concentrates on tiniest changes within seemingly static sound masses.

LINE is proud to present the first full length collaboration by Richard Chartier and Taylor Deupree since 1999's Spec. (12k).
For this collaboration, sound artists Richard Chartier and Taylor Deupree were invited by the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC, to create a new live work inspired by the Seascapes series of renowned Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto on the occasion of his retrospective exhibition. The result is this live recording, Specification.Fifteen. This work premiered on March 30, 2006 in front of the curved panoramic window of the Museum's Lerner Room as the sun set across the city's skyline. Specification.Fifteen evokes the stillness and opposing yet related spaces of Sugimoto's Seascapes, which suggest infinitesimal change and variation under a seemingly uniform surface.

Presents one piece each in homage to Morton Feldman by Richard Chartier, Steve Roden, and me on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary of his death in September 1987. I am amazed how well these pieces, in spite of being quite different in style, work together to constitute a whole. They also express the influence Morton Feldman's sublime works have had (and still have) on us in our personal ways of creating music.

Richard's HOW THINGS CHANGE is a rather intimate, pensive piece made of abstract electronic sounds and long stretches of silence, while Steve's STASIS is probably the most hypnotic and atmosperic set of slowly orbiting loops he has ever created. I, who like to say that the safest to expect from me is the unexpected, have composed a piece for winter rain, small brook, and sho, titled FUYU NO AME (FOR MORTON FELDMAN), a piece that belongs to what I have called my 'musique concrète, enhanced' strain of work, but sounds like else nothing I have done.

I have mastered the CD to form a unit with the silences between the works in proportion with the silences they contain. When the master was finished I noticed that the cover I had designed beforehand actually did not fit in with the music presented, and so designed an entirely new one. This cover will be the first full color cover for Trente Oiseaux, anticipating the switch to full color covers I had planned for 2003. I believe that this release is one of Trente Oiseaux's finest, in both the music it presents, and it's attractive packaging.

Varied is the follow up to 1999's highly sought after self titled release 0/r (12k1006), recently noted in Computer Music Journal essay "The Aesthetics of Failure: Post-Digital Tendencies in Contemporary Computer Music" by Kim Cascone (MIT Press, USA) in its discography of resources for listening). While 0/r suggested a sense of chaos with its jarring and syncopated digital sound, Varied utilizes much more refined compositional techniques to create highly deliberate passages of whispering sine waves, extreme frequencies, and looping rhythms of noise and detailed sonic pops.
