/ track a : akoasma : 5.39 min. : 33 rpm / track b : in b : 4.54 min. : 45 rpm / limited edition: 300 / format: 7" vinyl single / time: 10.33 min. the german project INSTITUT FUER FEINMOTORIK (short named IFF) produces music with recordplayers, but without playing any records. instead they use everything which somehow fits between turntables and pick-up cartridges such as household-rubberbands, paper-stickers, rubbergums, handicraft-tools and various tinker-trivias to create their unique sound. IFF is an artists group working in different formats and media. although, one main activity is acoustic-art / music. amongst others, IFF is located in bad saeckingen and freiburg (both germany), zurich (switzerland) and cologne (germany). IFFs music mostly appears in the context of electronic music, but is deeply mechanical and, if any, imitates structures and aesthetic codes of digital-/electronic music by the use of an important instrument of the electronic (dance-)music, namely the dj set-up (minus the records), to create an aesthetic approach of a stumble-structured rhythm music, sounding not unlike some state-of-the-art powerbook click-hop piece listened to through some closed doors. the 7" singke AKOASMA is their newest release, following the cd «penetrans» on the german label staub-gold, which earned good critics from spex to the wire. in contrast to previous releases, AKOASMA is a slow and sensible new composition, which shows a different face of the project. On the flip-side you find "IN B", a track which is less straightforward rhythm based and more hectic. for the switzerland based label synchron, which gave them a short and small new home, IFF contributed two very different pieces, which follow the aesthetic of digital music, while still working strictly acoustic. the minimalism of paper-scratching and rubber-band "clong" is still fascinating and worth to be listened to.
