The title of the latest album from Rapoon comes from a random moment of serendipity. Taking a break from his studio, artist Robin Storey chanced to walk into his kitchen just as a disembodied voice uttered the phrase "I am a foreigner". His wife had left a tape running in the cassette player, and the voice belonged to an actor on a "Teach Yourself Italian" tape. Voice and narration are frequently part of his work, so after making himself a cup of tea he took the tape back to his studio. Soon, after extracting several selections of dialog from the tape a new direction for his music emerged and the phrase "I am a Foreigner" became a key theme in this transformation. Being a "foreigner" can be understood in the most obvious sense, or as an abstract concept, but whether you're visiting a new country or simply hearing a radio broadcast in another language, your senses are sharpened and new sensations stand out in stark relief. We feel more awake, more alive. "I am a Foreigner" is therefore an exploration of new spaces and senses. |

Finally, the CD version of this limited LP release. Includes two new songs (“Blue Sanctions” and “Low Touch”) and an extended remix of “Missionary Bones”. "Just Say The Faith" comes from a very cold and damp place, perhaps inside an ancient abandoned church, where long shadows fall across gnarled tree roots and forgotten voices echo from dusty corners. The colors are black and brown, the elements are Earth and Water, and the season is most certainly Autumn. With each release Rapoon moves farther into a darker, more medieval Europe. The ergot mold grows thicker each year on the rye berries and the ghosts dance their crazed rites, all leading to this strange and mysterious album. "Just Say The Faith" has its roots in noise and music and rhythm and drone, all combining to produce an exquisitely melancholy atmostphere. | Former :zoviet*france: member Robin Storey continues his probing of the techno-tribal interface under the pseudonym Rapoon. Vernal Crossing is more concerned with the exploration of esoteric rhythmic structures than the previous Raising Earthly Spirits, but it's still long on atmosphere and experimentation, and every bit as fascinating. Storey combines the cut-and-paste sound designs of his former cohorts with the modes of Hassell, Roach, and mysterious, far-flung cultures in the realization of these multi-faceted works. As "Bol Baya" whips itself up into a frenzy of futurist gamelan and whispery electronic underpinnings, Storey then changes gears and abruptly enters a Middle Eastern / William Gibson twilight zone with "Dahina ta" or travels along a dirt road of tape loops and struck percussions during the surreal "Anatapurrah".
