The turntable has enjoyed a varied history in the realm of performance and experimental music. From the early phonographic works of John Cage to the spliced cut-ups of Christian Marclay in the 1980s, the device has proven to be a versatile tool for the creation and transformation of sound. Following a joint billing at Brisbane's Metro Arts Space in 2002, Melbourne based composer Philip Samartzis and sound artist Lawrence English shared a 30-minute performance that was to become the beginning of their on-going turntable duo. Both Samartzis (a member of the legendary Australian turntable group Gum) and English (a regular player with DJ Olive, Janek Schaefer and others) have long histories of live actions utilising turntables and together each of them brings a wealth of gestures and unique sonic qualities to the instrument. Recorded in early 2006, this edition captures the initial studio works from these two artists and seeks to reflect on the potential of the cyclical nature of vinyl and the surface noise that envelopes the very medium itself. |

Australian electro-acoustic composer Philip Samartzis is an increasingly vital presence in the Australian sound community. His work over the past decade and a half has offered a prophetic vision for each of his chosen formats and aesthetic approaches. On h [ ] Samartzis is joined by minimal Japanese composer Kozo Inada, who brings with him an equally refined and austere sound sensibility. Between them, these two composers collaborate to produce a highly detailed work that juxtaposes, obscures and ultimately unites pure electronics with environmental recordings. These elements are set to work against and within one another, the results causing the listener to reconsider which sounds are emanating from the interwoven tapestry of source materials. Celebrating the rich tradition of acousmatic sound and musique concréte, this composition provides a potent reminder of the potentials of sound as a transformative and (imagined) narrative medium. |

Originally conceived for eight-channel surround sound playback, Soft and Loud is comprised of field recordings made in Japan between 1999 and 2001 that were later arranged and mixed in Melbourne over a three year period. The objective of the field recordings was to document a variety of common environments in order to investigate the behaviour of singular events and their relationships to other sounds occupying the Japanese soundscape. Of particular interest is the cohesion with which artificially generated sounds are incorporated within the generally subdued natural acoustic environment. |

Composed specifically for vinyl, Touch Parking is the second collaboration between Danish composer Rasmus B Lunding and Australian artist Philip Samartzis, and is comprised of an eclectic series of reconfigured studio improvisations recorded in Denmark in 2003. Touch Parking exemplifies Lunding and Samartzis' comprehensive knowledge of the avant-garde, and expertise in abstraction, montage and spatialisation, in which new fields of acoustic experience are rendered from incongruous streams of data, contoured into a loving celebration of polytonal, atonal, and rhythmic as well as arrhythmic and dissonant music. The recordings have been carefully prepared for vinyl through a unique mastering process conducted by post-digital folkist Goodiepal who has also conceived and designed the unique vinyl-artwork. Therefore Touch Parking is in fact two releases in one, the second release of Lunding/Samartzis, and at the same time one in a series of Vinyl-art releases previously known as Goodiebags by the eccentric and mysterious Goodiepal. |

| Title: Mort Aux Vaches | |
| Label: Mort Aux Vaches | |
| Format: CD special package | |
| Cod. nr. mavsamartzis |
| "Philip Samartzis is one of the most innovative artists on the Australian sound art scene. Apart from a few releases on the excellent Australian Dorobo label, he has collaborated with a number of leading sound artists abroad. Latest release in the excellent Mort Aux Vaches-series presents three stylishly quite different projects approximately lasting for one hour. First track "Variable resistance" opens the show with low audible timbres, glitches and discreet noises that after a few minutes give way to a wide range of natural sounds from various field recordings, sometimes repetitive but otherwise constantly developing. Second track "Deconstructed windmills" opens slowly with short frequency sinewaves reminding of Panasonic (pre-Pan Sonic) that suddenly fades into pure silence until the next wave of noise flushes. Generally "Deconstructed windmills" is minimal in its expression, both being hypnotic in its repetitive sounds and quite noisy thanks to the use of high frequency sounds. Final track "Soft and loud" opens with some metallic percussive sounds followed by almost painful screeching sounds that suddenly penetrates and then disappears again. During the first part, the track constantly changes between silence and noise. Soon after deep rumbling subtle drones occur together with electroacoustic noise sounds gained from the use (or misuse) of various music instruments. "Soft and loud" is the most remarkable piece of work on the album sounding like a strange combination of Einstürzende Neubauten, Oval and Edgar Varese. Using a great variation in his sonic expression, Philip Samartzis certainly demonstrates his talent as an electroacoustic sound artist on this great edition of Mort Aux Vaches." * NMP [Vital Weekly 364] |
