| Label: Vibragun | |
| Format: special package 2xCD BOX | |
| Cod. nr. VIN003 |
|
"Communication Problems" is a double CD compilation of 20 exclusive works from artists working in and around electronic music today. For the third release on the Australian label Vibragun the general public was invited by mostly electronic means to contribute a track on the theme "communication problems"; a very open brief was supplied:http://vibragun.com.au/briefing.html
The fragments as represented here are drawn from artists of diverse backgrounds around the world. Some like Atom Heart, Chopper Read or the Thomases Köner and Brinkmann may already be familiar, whereas other such as Kettle, Cray and Skip might be less so. It is not about solipsism or relativism: the signal may be weak, garbled, or perhaps even rude, but a signal is there. What does it all mean? It's open to interpretation. **TRACK LISTING Disk 0: 1. Supercute Bye Byes - vari (Jamsine Guffond & Naoko Matsuoko) 2. Farmers Manual - X-Automation-17c-comm.down-stat 3. Thomas Köner - Foutu (T. Köner, voice: TT.WIP) 4. eM - reflective | mp3 high skies - staars | mp3 360° features tracks recorded specifically for this Foundry project by an assortment of the most intriguing and creative artists in the field. This compilation has as its center point a story fragment, a series of episodes which are illustrated with a variety of electronic music flavours, from ambient electronica to microsound and glitch. Contributors to 360° are, in order of appearance: Rhomb (releases on The Foundry and Archipelago imprint), eM (releases on The Foundry, Archipelago and Fallt), Jonathan Hughes (formerly Subspace with releases on Sunburst Fifty), High Skies (Mat Jarvis, formerly recording as Gas on Em:t), Mark Van Hoen with Seofon (Mark Van Hoen has released work as Locust and under his own name on Touch and Apollo; Seofon is a member of Ambient Temple of Imagination as well as a solo artist), Sketch (releases on Apollo and on End of Hum), Thermal (releases on his own Boxman label and Archipelago imprint), and Kim Cascone (releases on Ritornell and Digital Narcis among many others). The album begins with Rhomb's 360° Theme, a track that displays a kind of disjointed weightlessness while conveying its auroral melodic statement. eM follows with Reflective, a passacaglia as heard through a quantum discontinuity, tones drawn out over the event horizon. Reflective segues into the first of six Interpolations, short sonic motifs which serve as bridges between tracks. Jonathan Hughes' Viscous Space emerges like some lost transmission, slowly coalescing as a downtempo groove before dissipating into the ether. Following the second bridge High Skies' Staars bubbles into life, melodic effervescence and intricate rhythm in perfect concert. Staars fades into the third Interpolation and then into Shrine, a collaboration between Mark Van Hoen and Seofon. Shrine blends intense microbeats with the vapour of worship to create a heady presence, atmospheric yet driving. Another bridge and we find ourselves amidst the compelling chaos of Zargosso. With this masterful piece Sketch attains both density and clarity, pulse and drift... contradictions that are deeply hypnotic. The penultimate Interpolation devolves into the minimal Embers. Here Thermal shows us a universe of apparent calm, events scattered over time in unusual ways, evolutions and repetitions slurring the weft of expectations. One final Interpolation and Kim Cascone's Superfield manifests a presence truly other. Focussed and jittery, Superfield resonates with untold tales, the sound of geometries intersecting, energies colliding and flowing into new moments, another chronological stream. 360° completes the circle with an echoing of Rhomb's 360° Theme, transformed here by the intervening aural sojourn into something soothing but not without lingering questions. 360° describes an arc, both in terms of a progression through musical styles and as an episodic narrative. The events of the story are mysterious, open to interpretation, but with the final track we are brought full circle, ending where we began, left with a taste of the exotic on our lips. |

| Title: Amplify 2002 | |
| Label: Erstwhile | |
| Format: BOX (7CD+DVD) | |
| Cod. nr. ERSTWHILE033-040 |
|
The AMPLIFY 2002: balance box set has been designed and assembled to recreate as much as possible the experience of being in Tokyo in late October 2002 for the week-long whirlwind of music and camaraderie revolving around the 2002 AMPLIFY festival. The annual series of AMPLIFY festivals began in 2001 in NYC, followed in 2002 by the event documented in this box. AMPLIFY returned to NYC in February 2003, and the next AMPLIFY will be in Cologne and Berlin in May 2004, co-curated by Keith Rowe and Jon Abbey. The festivals are closely tied to the Erstwhile label, and are designed to showcase an ambitious amount of music within a short time period, demanding increased attention and focus from both the musicians and the audience. This box set aims to convey at least part of the intense atmosphere created by AMPLIFY's climate of total immersion. The AMPLIFY 2002: balance box set contains over seven hours of music on seven CDs, consisting of: 1) Eight of the twelve sets from the festival itself, which took place over three nights at Star Pine's Cafe in Kichijoji, Tokyo. 2) Two CDs compiled from the smaller club shows which took place before and after the festival itself, organized by Toshimaru Nakamura and Taku Sugimoto, including an entire disc by the all-star guitar septet of Keith Rowe, Tetuzi Akiyama, Oren Ambarchi, Nakamura, Otomo Yoshihide, Burkhard Stangl and Sugimoto. 3) A studio recording by the duo of Günter Müller and Toshimaru Nakamura, recorded that same week. This disc has been carefully sequenced and constructed, and is essentially a regular Erstwhile release contained within the larger box. The box also features a DVD by filmmaker Jonas Leddington and a 52 page, full-color booklet with photography by Yuko Zama and twenty separate essays by many of the people involved in the festival. Leddington's DVD contains a 109-minute visual document titled "balance beams," which is built around the festival itself and includes structured excerpts from all twelve sets, commentary from the musicians, behind-the-scenes footage, as well as images and sounds from Tokyo. Footage of the Stangl/Kurzmann set includes cuts of Viennese filmmaker Michaela Grill's Schnee video, as it was shown live in Tokyo. The DVD extras include 5.1 surround sound audio-only versions of the Rowe/Lehn/Schmickler and Müller/Otomo sets, as well as three short individual features based on the three nights of outside festival performances that discs 1 and 7 were chosen from, including Keith Rowe discussing with the other guitarists how he believes a musician should approach performing the graphic score of Cardew's Treatise. The box set is a limited edition of 800 copies, and will not be reprinted. 033: CD 1 (outside festival shows): 1. Thomas Lehn/Toshimaru Nakamura-13:12 - 2. "An interesting remix set in that the source material is the sound-track to Martin Arnold's most recently completed film Alone, Life Wastes Andy Hardy (1998), which is itself a 15 minute 'remix' of short segments from three Judy Garland & Mickey Rooney screen-trysts, tiny bi-directional loops of natural frame-motion which repeat for minutes on end, very glitch indeed. Fitting that Fennesz, Anderegg, Akira Rabelais, N/A, A Silent Partner, Pimmon, Steve Roden were all chosen, set to task on disassembling these seemingly endless (re)iterations. Outcome ranges from grainy digital drone-gloss (lovely Anderegg track) to micro-concrete renderings (Fennesz). Sorted and aware." -- Hrvatski. |

Janek Schaefer / Robert Hampson . Main / Stephen Vitiello / Kurt Ralske / Christophe Charles "The idea which preoccupies us in this series, is to create sound objects, abstract in their appearance, with musicians who are, in most cases, plastic artists too. The border between music and plastic arts is thinner than ever before. This is what we will try to explore for the time being. On this first volume you will find tracks from Janek Schaeffer, Main:Robert Hampson, Christophe Charles, Stephen Vitiello and Kurt Ralske. Janek Schaeffer is based in london as architecte and musician. After his Above Buildings, he worked with Robert Hampson on a project called Comae. Completing actually for a complete album for Sub Rosa (early 2002). Moreover he invented the Tri-Phonic Turntable! Robert Hampson is the founder of Loop and Main. He produced about 12 records from early 90 and participated to the 'Gilles Deleuze Unit' with scanner mid-90. Christophe Charles is a french sound plastician and lives in Tokyo. Close in mind with Markus Popp/Oval -- he released Undirected 1986-1996 on Mille Plateaux and Dok -- a soundfile exchange between Oval and him. Stephen Vitiello was born in New York City in 1964, his work has been featured in group exhibitions at Whitney museum and Postmasters gallery, in New York. As a musician and media-artist, he is involved in the New York avant garde, he is too a close collaborator of Nam June Paik and make a record on suphur with Scanner. Kurt Ralske is a Manhattan-based composer, electronic musician, and computer audio-video artist. Described by Alternative Press as 'proving than machines do indeed have souls'. Furthermore he is the founder of the mythic Ultra Vivid Scene 10 years ago." |

Volume Three features more of the labels successes including Plastikman, Speedy J, The Kooky Scientist and Fuse (aka Ritchie Hawtin) vs (legendary UK techno act) LFO, the album continues to chronicle the labels development from its awkward adolescence through to its celebrated maturity. A near perfect snapshot, highlighting the label and its artists desire to progress far beyond the rigid confines of any given genre, Plus 8 Classics is a series full of far reaching pieces of music.
