Polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs), also known as "nacreous clouds", are found in the winter polar stratosphere at altitudes of 15,000–25,000 metres (50,000–80,000 ft). Due to their high altitude and the curvature of the surface of the Earth, these clouds will receive sunlight from below the horizon and reflect it to the ground, shining brightly well before dawn or after dusk. PSCs form at very low temperatures, below -78 °C. These temperatures can occur in the lower stratosphere in polar winter. In the Antarctic, temperatures below -88 °C frequently cause type II PSCs. Such low temperatures are rarer in the Arctic. Apart from arctic regions, PSCs have also been known to be seen in Scandinavia, Iceland, Alaska and Northern Canada. Sometimes, however, they occur as far south as England.
This beautiful release features 37 short tracks of raw iridescent ambience (total time exceeding 78 minutes) reflecting the hyper-temporal nature of what are known as "nacreous clouds". And like the clouds, the tracks are quick to appear and disappear. Playback using the random shuffle mode of your CD player is highly recommended.
While this is undoubtedly an ambient release, it is unusual in that there are many short tracks instead of one or two long ones, and each of the tracks is notably "raw" in that they do not use additional processing like reverb to enhance the initial processed sound sources further. This might prove to be a challenge for those who prefer their ambience buried under a thousand pounds of reverb, but it is not the intent of the artists or and/OAR to release "just another ambient CD". Instead, we invite you to explore an alternative method of rendering ambience in a way that is more immediate, therefore effecting the listener's mind in a more personal and powerful way.
"We originally recorded ourselves playing instruments such as cello, violin, piano and bells. We also made recordings of household sounds (such as showers, running water in the sink, and television static), plus the wind outside, beaches cars passing, walking on gravel streets, etc. Afterward we went through everything, choosing specific parts in lengths ranging from 3 seconds to 3 minutes, and made tape loops of everything. At this point, we arranged the different tape loops into patterns and speeds meant to resemble the clouds and their actions as much as possible. When mixing the loops, we played three to six of them at a time, on different reel-to-reel tape players connected to both of our laptops and channeled back out into a Kaiser filter." (Celer)
Celer are the wife and husband duo of Dani Baquet-Long and Will Long. After releasing a rather prolific series of handcrafted self-released CDRs, 2008 has seen a sudden flurry of CD releases on recording labels such as Spekk (with Matthieu Ruhlmann), two releases on Infraction (with a possible third to come?), plus and/OAR.

The work on Vista began in the summer of 2006 with recordings made by Asher in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston. Walking through the alleys and side streets he recorded the various mechanical rooms, generators, ventilation systems and idling motors which were to be found there. These recordings were processed and sent to Kahn.
Later that fall, Kahn sent Asher several pre-dawn recordings he had made on the shores of Zürich Lake. Asher processed these in keeping with the methods he had used with his own location recordings so as to create continuity among the amassing material. Unprocessed wind recordings made by Kahn in the Swiss Alps in the summer of 2007 comprised the final batch of material used on Vista. Asher and Kahn spent the remainder of that year working on a final mix. Addressing the idea of hearing and seeing out and beyond spatial planes, the title Vista references both the aural expanses of Asher's home on a hill in the town of Somerville and Kahn's trips to the Alps and Zürich Lake.
In processing and mixing the discrete details of a landscape, we hear them from a real physical distance. Through the incidental combinations of processed local sounds and sound materials which are entirely foreign to us, an imaginative aural view is created which obscures any relationship to a documentary account of the original locations recorded for Vista.

THE WIRE (AUGUST 2008)
Yannick Dauby, Christophe Havard and Hughes Germain concluded their 2004 residency at the Centre d'Art Passerelle in Brest, France with a sound installation / performance which used the resonant frequencies of the building as the source for their piece. The three controlled the oscillations of vibrating devices which rattled heavy chimney and steel doors for low throbbing frequencies. They also manipulated the feedback interplay between loudspeakers, narrowband parabolic microphones for a glistening range of mid- and high range frequencies. As mathematically precise as the spatial positioning of these devices must have been in the installation space, the movement of tones gliding across the audio spectrum enjoys a rich poetry of angelic shimmering and subharmonic heaviness. The psychoacoustic properties are a fascinating point of entry, but the results captured on this disc transcend the process, and are reminscent of similar successes from Christina Kubisch and Stephen Vitiello. Yui Onodera first attracted attention with work released on his own Critical Path label in 2005. It wasn't too long after, that he attracted the attention of Drone Records, and/OAR, Mystery Sea, Taalem and Gears Of Sand (releases still forthcoming on Mystery Sea and Gears Of Sand).
Suisei is a work composed from field recordings and pump organ. Edited and re-mastered by Dale Lloyd.
With Suisei, each listener's inner cinema will find its camera lens slowly panning and cross-fading from one enigmatic location to another, as if unveiling ambiguous visual clues pertaining to some wondrous culminating event that many might not fully understand, yet it will still manage to leave an indelible impression upon the subconscious mind and a very subtle pull on the emotions. A mystery drone soundscape journey along the shores of an unfathomable glistening sea...
Packaged in four color digipak. Very limited at 300 copies.

An immersion into the sonic matter from micro- and macro- environments dominated by wind in Patagonia. A vast barren space shaped and inhabited by the ever-changing forces of unmuted plants, rocks, sand, snow, and ice. An irregular broad-band environment of relentless strength and richness. And above all, a tour de force of profound listening.

This is the second of a series of label projects pertaining to film directors. The first one was for Andrei Tarkovsky, the third one is currently in progress and pertains to Michelangelo Antonioni's "Tetralogy" (L'Avventura/La Notte/L'Eclisse/Deserto Rosso).
This second release turns its focus upon Yasujiro Ozu's use of "pillow shots" (i.e. short poetic pauses that appear between the acting segments of his films. The term "pillow shot" was not coined by Ozu himself, but several years after his passing in the early 1960s by a Japanese journalist who was trying to draw a comparison of the intermediate scenes to "pillow words" found in traditional Japanese poetry. This is a double CD release with both CDs featuring audio plus a cross-platform compatible PDF booklet containing pillow shots (courtesy of Criterion Collection) and liner notes.
Each artist who appears on this release was asked to choose one or more "pillow shots" to use as inspiration for their pieces. A link to web pages containing a large assortment of pillow shots" was provided, and accordingly, the pillow shots were reserved on a first come, first served basis. The artists also watched the films from which the pillow shots came from in order to get a sense of how their chosen pillow shots were employed by Ozu.
The sound work featured represents a wide range of artistic approaches, but as always with these projects, the artists were chosen specifically, based on their previous work and on how it might contribute to the collective whole of each project.

After their first successful collaboration "Further Consequences of Reinterpretation" (premiered in May 2003 at the Goethe-Institut in Lisbon, released as a CD album by the Portugal-based label Crónica), and the project's appendix release entitled "Product", the sound artists Paulo Raposo and Marc Behrens have created a new dynamic sound work entitled HADES.
HADES is based on sound recordings made aboard Lisbon ferries and at the quays of Cais do Sodré, Trafaria and Cacilhas 2001-2005. Both artists had initially set out to record independently, being fascinated with the sounds of the ship hull and landing gear, as well as with the actual passage on the river, which gives a magnificent (maybe the best) view on large parts of the old city of Lisbon.
During the course of the work which took three years to complete, some more precisely directed recordings were made together. Understanding the actual crossing as a symbolic passage, and once it was reduced to sound and memory, it became associated to the crossing of the mythic river Styx to enter Hades, the ancient Greek underworld.
As the different sound recordings provide the artists with very diverse material (for example low frequencies from the ship's hulls and motors, high frequencies and beats from the gates at Cais do Sodré), they understand the composition as hovering on the delicate borderline between a soundscape portrait and a multi-strata arrangement, in which things happen parallelly, and individual layers move on more than one path simultaneously.
In the opinion of and/OAR, HADES is not only one of the strongest works to surface from either artist, a/O will go out on a limb to state that it could very well set a new precedent of quality for collaboration work of it's ilk. Needless to say, a/O is highly honored to be releasing it. Please give it a very attentive listen. Especially on headphones!

On the night of Sunday, May 6, 2001, composer Kenneth Kirschner, as part of a series of pieces documenting the sounds of different New York City neighborhoods, took his tape recorder to the Financial District of Lower Manhattan to begin field recordings for a new piece. The resulting low-resolution portrait captured the sounds of a deserted urban landscape: the empty, winding streets of old Dutch New Amsterdam, its modern, towering skyscrapers -- and a region of the city that, several months later, would be renamed Ground Zero.
and/OAR is proud to present "May 6, 2001", a collection of five interpretations by five renowned contemporary composers of the aforementioned field recording portrait.
With excerpts from Kirschner's original 2001 composition based on the field recording, the CD also includes pieces by Taylor Deupree (USA), Tomas Korber (Switzerland), Ralph Steinbrüchel (Switzerland), and Aaron Ximm (aka Quiet American; USA), all utilizing the 2001 Financial District field recording as their sole source material. The result is a project that obliquely and subtly evokes the source recording and its subsequent meanings, while also standing on its own as an estimable example of each artist's mastery of his craft.

Highly indicative of the nomadic life that international sound artist Michael Northam has come to know over the past 5 or so years, this release represents a sonic recollection of his life dispersed across a vast geography, pinpointing three specific locations and moments from his long journey:
- Glacier du Trient, Switzerland / France
- Eagle Creek, Indianapolis
- Ils Grosbois, Montreal
At times, this hypnotic release presents meditative, invigorating, and eerie translations of places and experiences in ways that only Northam can poetically convey.
Originally dispersed among friends in 2003, as a limited edition "spontaneous document" CDR, this work is now re-issued on CD so it can finally be enjoyed by more people. And deservedly so.

Semper is Alluvial's first release of 2005 and is co-released with the and/OAR label. Seattle-based composer Dale Lloyd has collaborated in the past with people such as Yannick Dauby and Michael Northam, and has had work released by labels such as Bremsstrahlung Recordings, Staalplaat and Sirr.ecords. For the past 5 years, Lloyd has played a quiet but strong role in bringing new life to the notion of 'environmental recordings as sound art' (or "Phonography") with the highly regarded compilations produced for Phonography.org, as well as other projects and activities.
The first piece entitled 'Semper', is mostly a quiet and contemplative work, yet it contains sprawling builds from near silent ebbs and flows to thunderous crescendos. Also heard are delicate field recordings and found objects transformed and woven into intricate electronic tapestries. The second and shorter piece titled "Magnesian Recumbit" is a slowly building ambient work with a unique sense of melancholy that makes for a perfect ending.
For me, Semper basically illustrates a series of self-searching questions (with subtle epiphanies) followed by a somewhat enigmatic resolve or 'answer', of which I believe we have all encountered in our lives in one way or another.
(Dale Lloyd)
"Surely, it is one of the strongest works to come from both Lloyd and Alluvial." (Kevin Wienke - Alluvial Recordings)

and/OAR is extremely happy to present this powerfully mesmerizing work; carefully remastered and reissued for the first time on CD format. Under the original title of "Der Sonne", this work was originally issued as a limited quantity CDR release on Andrew Deutsch's Magic If label several years ago.
"The Sun was constructed by passing ocean waves (recorded at Rye Beach, New Hampshire), through various digital processing devices. The most articulate of these processors was a tone generator able to isolate and respond to specific frequencies present in the ocean waves. The concept behind The Sun was to make a static music or a kind of music that just shimmered in place. This concept can be traced back to the works of Anthony Braxton in his Tri Axiom Writings, and to Stockhausen in his early serial pieces. As Stockhausen says, "there is a difference between starting and stopping and beginning and ending". The pieces presented here do not begin and end but simply start and stop. The Sun is also a work, in a series of works, I have created to aid in the process of drawing. I call these works 'image drones/sounds for drawing'. The sounds were all inspired by the 'power field theories' of Joseph Beuys and are dedicated to him and his family." (Andrew Deutsch)
This release will present the first of a new line of packaging for and/OAR. Nicely printed oversized cardstock inserts inside a sturdy clear plastic sleeve with a flap. The CDs will be protected by cloth safety sleeves made in Japan. Special thanks to Kiyoshi Mizutani and Kiyoharu Kuwayama for their help in obtaining the sleeves.

and/OAR is very pleased to present a new work by Dutch sound artist Jos Smolders, who is also known as one of the founding members of THU20 (along with Roel Meelkop & Peter Duimelinks). This is Smolders' first release in a long time to not use sounds exclusive to electronic sources. Sound sources include field recordings from Sweden and Norway, combined with sounds from the street where Smolders resides. The result is an ionized mixture of organic progressions and soundscapes.
At times, this release displays energetic jolts of adrenaline tempered with intermittent moments of late night contemplative quiescence. Abstract and surreal Escher-like moments appear into distant view like a half remembered dream, and acoustic and electronic Moebius sound strips suddenly launch without warning.
This is the first and/OAR CDR release using 2 color silk screen printing on the disc. Unfortunately, the true silver/silver discs cannot be used as before, but the disc company has assured that these discs are of the highest quality.

Comparisons between the sand of the earth with the stars above are many, but comparisons of this release by American composer John Hudak with his previous work are far less to be found.
The first piece of this CD mastered by John's friend and collaborator Stephan Mathieu (Sirr.ecords, Lucky Kitchen, Hapna, etc), is unlike much of John's previous work in that it features sharp staccato percussive sounds suddenly dodging in and out, but nevertheless it still has John's "endless" compositional sense written into it. A subtle sense of humor seems to be inherent in the piece as well, as if some of the sounds hesitate with indecision as to whether or not they should make their presence known or perhaps they are trying to avoid colliding with some of the other sounds. And upon listening to this piece, be careful with volume settings at first listen, because the listener will quickly discover another aspect of this piece that is unlike much of John's previous work: sudden volume shifts. This seems to suggest that the sounds are also changeable in temperament as well!
The second piece on this CD is perhaps the most meditative of the collection with its muted midrange buzzing that jumps around within the stereo spectrum, perhaps being reminiscent of musical radar signals or sonifications of normally inaudible activity occurring in a planet's magnetosphere, all the while maintaining a benevolent warmth throughout.
And what could possibly be described as the amplification of rolling ion particle blasts being broadcast via shortwave radio, tells us that we have reached the third and final piece of this collection of what could be considered as being among John Hudak's finest works.

This is the first full length CD for Sawako Kato and the first replicated CD release for and/OAR. This is a perfect release for the Spring and Summer, and a beautiful one at that. Yours Gray shows Sawako's work begin to drift into slightly different directions from her previous releases, with more ambient, and at times, vaguely melodic flourishes that can evoke wistful hazy daydream memories of childhood or perhaps lifetime dreams yet fulfilled. Obviously each listener can derive what they wish from this music. All the more so, since Sawako's paradoxical work tends to encompass deep contemplation, yet with no premeditated intentions on her part.
This release features collaboration work with people such as Toshimaru Nakamura, Kiyoharu Kuwayama (Kuwayama/Kijima & Lethe), Mitchell Akiyama (Sub Rosa, Raster Noton), Asuna (Lucky Kitchen), and Yuichiro Fujimoto (Smalltown Supersound). This release is packaged in a slimline jewel case with a four page insert.

This is a beautiful follow-up to Canadian sound artist S. Arden Hill's wonderful work on the 3-way split release with Nibo and Vend on
the Line label. Radiant tones and crackling artifacts embellish hazy vistas of slow falling snow... And that's just one track. With titles like "Still Flowing Beneath The Ice", "There is Hoarfrost on The Trees", "A Range Of Outward Emotions On An Awkward Snowy Day", and "- 40 Degrees C", one would expect equally inclement soundworks, but instead, Arden has created what could be among some of the warmest pieces ever created regarding such climatic conditions, while still successfully conveying what would commonly be viewed as otherwise.
