David Tudor, pianist - a profession, a vocation, a life. From 1950 until around 1965, David Tudor was the epitome of the pianist who could simply play anything. In fact, David Tudor was no longer a name, but an indication for instrumentation as dozens of pieces were written "for David Tudor". As early as 1960, after having conquered all of the challenges posed by serial piano music, Tudor began to differentiate between composers who filled him with life and those who left him cold - the focus of his repertory became crystallized. The main criterion for his choices were shaped by the part he would play as interpreter in the composition. He distinguished carefully between having a free choice among prefabricated parts - generally called aleatoric, as for example, Stockhausen's Klavierstück XI (dedicated, as his Klavierstücke V-VIII, to Tudor) - and indeterminate actions. In the first case, they have a tendency to "put me to sleep", whereby pieces that are less limiting led him to say, "I feel that I'm alive in every part of my consciousness". The program of these CDs portrays these distinctions.

Audio CD with three compositions by Luigi Nono, recorded at the Berlin festival "Inventionen".
The live electronics that Nono worked with for the first time in the early 1980's at the Freiburg Experimental Studio also serves the musical displacement: the music moves away from clear spatial and timbral assignations. Due to electronic processing, the sonic characteristics of both instruments, bass flute and cello, can hardly be recognized. Tones and gestures are lengthened into seeming infinity and move in space.

For Giacinto Scelsi, music was above all a manifestation of the energy of sound in the making. Since the early 1950's, at the latest, the idea of sound as a cosmic force, rooted in the Indian notion of music, had become fundamental to his thinking -- from then on, tones and sounds were for him phenomena whose 'depth' had yet to be experienced. Rooted in these assumptions as well is Scelsi's belief that he as subject must completely withdraw, surrendering himself to that which endeavors to free itself through him.

Vocrolls II (1988) consists of recordings of a glass sphere coming to rest in a Tibetan metal bowl, processed in physics-defying fashion through an early desktop port of the now-prevalent phase vocoder algorithm.
Mouse Ware (1998) is the soundtrack to an installation (10 different makes and models of computer mouse are preserved in alcohol, accompanied by 10 user-friendly mice mounted on a circular table with tiny contact microphones attached to the shells sending signals to one of ten speakers mounted underneath) that predates the laptop ultra-minimalist live event in sound (akin to a Dat Politics set during a brownout).
Kubisch constructed Old Sounds Archive (1999) out of an array of taped bell sound effects located in the archive at the Free Berlin Broadcasting Section, echoing her amazing installation at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (documented on the Edition RZ Dreaming of a Major Third CD) with a noticeable rhythmic pulse throughout.

A composition for the clocktower of MASS MoCa, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.
The second Kubisch CD on RZ, from one of Germany's more important sound composers. This features a composition for the clocktower of the MA Museum of Contemporary Art. All the sounds derive directly from the original bells from the MASS MoCA clocktower. The sounds have been pitch shifted and attack shaped, but have not been electronically altered. The result is a CD of ultimate installation drone and a must for fans of the Het Apollohuis aesthetic, sound artists like Bill Fontana, etc.
Although simple in effect and at times almost transparent, Kubisch's installation utilizes complex technology. A band of black reflective solar panels, which surrounds the tower just below the window, acts as a sunlight sensor. The sensor transmits information about the intensity and position of the sun to a computer. A unique software program -- designed for this project by engineer Manfred Fox -- reacts to the sunlight, assembling pre-recorded bell sounds.
