Cistern was made in a two million gallon underground reservoir at Fort Worden, a de-commissioned military base overlooking the entrance to the Puget Sound. The space's resonance extended the instruments in a way similar to electronic processing. The acoustic properties of the cistern created new sonic relationships to which the group applied their musical concept. Cistern captures Doublends Vert's first experiences in the sound-world of the cistern. Doublends Vert formed in 2003 through a common interest in creating restrained, acoustic music exploring the timbre blending possibilities of the violin, accordion, and clarinet. "On the Line label comes the true surprise. Doublends Vert is a quartet of musicians who play violin, accordion, timbales and clarinet. No computer processing, no glitch and that is something of a change in the label's work so far. The work was recorded in a two million gallon underground reservoir in Fort Worden. The natural reverb of the space acts as it's own electronic processing and at such it's not strange that is released by Line. The players (Adam Diller, Annie Lewandowski, Tom Swafford and Matt Crane) play six pieces of improvised music (I assume) in which the sustain of sounds is important. On each of the four instruments they play stretched out tones that sound out beyond their decay. It's almost classical music, along the lines of Arvo Part or Morton Feldman, but an influence of Pauline Oliveros can also be traced. It's a most powerful recording, even when it doesn't sound noise related. It's a beautiful disc of sustaining sounds, slowly bent music..... It's a most pleasant surprise." LINE is proud to present Wiel the first full length from the collaborative project VEND, by Joe Gilmore and Alex Peverett. Wiel is a selection of compositions focusing on a subtle, delicate use of acoustic and synthetic sound in both abstract and linear form. Shorter pieces of acoustic events flutter about the stereo field with almost accidental design and are related to Vend's use of playful rhythmic compositions. The two longer compositions, Wiel vii/2 and vi/2 take their form from the sonification of visually complex spiral patterns. Joe Gilmore is a graphic designer and sound artist currently living in the North of England. He is co-founder of rand()% an automated net radio station streaming real-time generative music which was recently exhibited at ZKM (Zentrum fur Kunst und Medienteknologie) in Karlsruhe, Germany and also at The Media Centre, Huddersfield, UK. He has also been actively involved in organising music events in the UK, recently curating the Ultrasound Festival. His installations have been exhibited in the US, Germany, Holland and the UK. Alex Peverett studied Phonic art at the University of Lincolnshire and Humberside. He has been active in producing electronic music, installations and video works over the past decade. His works have been presented at international events including Sonar (Spain), Lovebytes and All Tomorrow's Parties (England). Alex Peverett is currently residing and working in Sendai, Japan. |

Clean is a compilation of digital work by three international artists/projects exploring their own diverse languages/processes to create both sound and sound installations of minimalist aesthetics. The working title of "clean" was the only parameter given to the artists, who were asked to express this term in sound form. |

The first full length release for Roel Meelkop on LINE, (To Be Announced) showcases his amazing use of the sound field shuttling across low elements, high frequencies, quiet movements, and jarring unexpected loud events. (To Be Announced)'s unique "acoustic" sounds and synthetic sounds makes repeated listening reveal a myriad layers and juxtaposition. Roel Meelkop (1963) studied visual arts and art theory at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. During a post-graduate course at the same academy he decided to dedicate his work to sound and music. His musical activities date back to the early 1980s when he started influential group THU20, with Jac van Bussel, Peter Duimelinks, Jos Smolders and Guido Doesborg. The working method of THU20 included many discussions about how to compose and why. This period was crucial in forming his ideas and concepts about sound and how to organise it, but it was not until the mid nineties that he was able to fully realise these ideas. The purchase of a sampler and later a computer radically changed his possibilities of working with sound, offering infinitely more control and freedom. Since then he has worked steadily on a body of work with releases on such labels as Trente Oiseaux (Germany), Staalplaat (Netherlands) and Intransitive (US). His other activities include working as a member of both Kapotte Muziek and GOEM with Peter Duimelinks and Frans De Waard and organising sound events in Rotterdam. Aside from releases, Meelkop also creates site-specific sound installations, often in collaboration with other artists and has performed live around the world. |

Monochrome Rust, the third piece in a triptychon, initiated with the works Monochrome White and Polychrome w/Neon Nails, presents what a shiny new, digitally clean piece like Polychrome might become after fifty years of degradation and corrosion - the neon nails have become rusted, and lost their shine. Nevertheless, this study of transience is not negative - it rather contains some of the calm of handling memories of long gone events, seen in a new perspective created by the passing of time. Differential is, in a way, the epilogue, the final touch added to the triptychon of Monochrome White, Polychrome w/Neon Nails, and Monochrome Rust that completes this cycle based on the work In Audio by British duo, Immedia. The title Differential refers to the way I have derived its basic material: Digidesign's Sound Designer II software has a function called 'compare files' this process compares two sound files, and writes the difference between them (i.e., the frequencies they do not have in common) into a new sound file. For Differential, I had Sound Designer first calculate the difference between Monochrome White and Polychrome w/Neon Nails, then the difference between Monochrome White and Monochrome Rust, and finally, the difference between the two difference files. I listened to the resulting difference between differences, and decided that the 'drama' of the piece would be better if I reversed the whole, which I did. I then developed the appropriate panorama and equalization settings to make the entire process of the piece more apparent, and more perceptible. The final step was turning the volume down, until the piece was about half as loud as the three others in the work cycle. Differential is a very subtle, very filigree piece, maybe even more abstract and minimalist than the three pieces it was derived from, much like a translucent version of Monochrome White. I'm quite fond of the piece, and believe it will turn this work cycle into a complete whole. It also adds to the use of the whole cycle for an eight channel sound installation. I dedicate Differential to the people who have made it all possible: Darren & Vicky, Richard, and Taylor. bernhard günter, august 2001 |

Originally begun in 1999, this new series of compositions by German composer Bernhard Günter utilizes Immedia's in audio work, available on the collection 2 | 1 (LINE_002), as source material, for which the release was originally intended - an origin for new sound works. The idea for Monochrome White originated while viewing a Bill Voila retrospective in Frankfurt, Germany. Inspired, Günter conceived that "the piece would only use high frequency spectra to lift it off the ground, so to speak, and it would only use 'empty' intervals (4ths and 9ths) to not have it rest on a root note, but to keep it harmonically floating/suspended." The second piece Polychrome w/Neon Nails is a transformation of the Monochrome White, lower in pitch and doubling the rate of change, it results in a sound world that might be likened to a swarm of digital insects.. |
