following dataplex cd (raster-noton, r-n068), test pattern is the second audio release in ryoji ikeda's multimedia project datamatics; an ongoing exploration of the potential to perceive the invisible multi–substance of data that permeates our world. test pattern acts as a system that converts any type of data (text, sounds, photos and movies) into barcode patterns and binary patterns of 0s and 1s. through the conversion of raw data into digital audio files, ikeda enables us to listen to the flow of data, creating an extraordinary and unexpected soundtrack. these sequences of data reveal a rich variety of microscopic structures which form ikeda's raw material; working with these micro-structures they sometimes form the basis of chronological sequences, sometimes he focuses on their rhythmic qualities. all sounds are the result of ikeda's manipulation of this raw data. test pattern aims to examine the relationship between critical points of device performance and the threshold of human perception, pushing both to their absolute limits. almost all tracks on this release are unsuitable for conversion into high-quality mp3 files. the velocity of the audio files is ultra–fast, some hundreds of frames per second, so that the album provides a performance test for the audio equipment, as well as a response test for the audience's perceptions. |

'transform', originally released on mille plateaux (mp 102, 2001), is now being re-released on raster-noton. the album, released as cd, comes with a new cover and digitally remastered. on 'transform', alva noto means to reduce the aesthetic of pop to the bone. rather than in pop music, where the basic focus lies on harmonic and melodic forms, on transform they give way to pure rhythm structures derived from only sine tones and white noise, which nevertheless convey an emotional level. transform is the first part of alva noto's 'transall' series (along with the eps 'transrapid', 'transspray', 'transvision', 2001-2005) and after his first release on mille plateaux, 'prototypes' (mp 82, 2000), marked his next step into a more rhythmically oriented phase of his work. |

Between his reputation as swift shifting improviser, concréte composer and turntable deconstructionist, Marseilles based artist ERIKM has earned himself an enviable position in the European music community. With Stéme, his most ambitious and fully realised compositional work to date, he devolves and recontextualises the boundaries between sound source and sound media. In essence, Stème originates from a selection of ten one minute long sound pieces burned on a CD which was deliberately damaged. These media (music on modified media or field recording) formed the basis of multiple improvised session including multiple stages of construction and destruction of these acoustic matters using my different electronic real time live music systems (3k-pad system & MD or CD-dj and electronics). The resulting sounds are truly distinctive – filigree like sonic details are brought into sharp focus, tuning the ears with their paced spatial movements. Occasional grabs of the source sound material appear and are erased equally as quickly. A genuinely powerful statement of compositional intent. |

Finally, the conclusion of the Hypernatural electroacoustic trilogy...
Six years after the release of "Hypernatural #2", Yoshio Machida is rounding up his magnificent trilogy of electroacoustic collages with "Hypernatural #3". A unique and highly personal work, the Hypernatural series has made of Machida a world-class sound artist. Assemblages of field recordings and treated instrumental sounds, the music on "Hypernatural #3" evokes simultaneously the universal and the intimate, Mankind and Nature. Yoshio Machida has been working on this series since 1997. The first volume was self-released in 1999 and had for theme memory in Eastern Asia ; Volume 2, released by Softl Music in 2001, focused on transparency, unconsciousness and invisible existence. "Hypernatural #3", the last instalment in this triptych, is about oblivion. Machida explains: "Oblivion is characteristic of the correlation between matter and time. Oblivion has a positive aspect: it appears as a natural phenomenon in the passage of time and becomes a factor in creating new worlds. Nature consists of a myriad of different memory-oblivion cycles". |

1 - Ecclesia Semper Reformanda (7:48) 2 - Spatial (1:37) 3 - Steel String + Static (2:04) 4 - Perpetuum Mobile (9:06) duncan ó ceallaigh : electronics duncan o ceallaigh first came to note through his debut release 'distant voices, still lives' in november 2007 on the renowned belgian U-Cover label. whereas that release had a broad palette of styles incorporating elements of ambient, microsound, guitar drone and folkatronica, the 'esr' EP concentrates more on the former two directions with a unified theme - the paradox between stasis and movement, whether in space or time, 'always now' versus 'the only constant is change' as it were. taking martin luther's motto for the protestant reformation 'the church in constant reform' as its inspiration, the title track appears at first static - in both senses of the word. however as it progresses there occurs an ever-changing collision between a series of simple melodic tones and pulses of unequal length, all unfolding without ever superficially altering form. 'perpetuum mobile', as its title suggests, continues this conceit, based on a drone (tense? relaxing?) interrupted by occasional artefacts and melodies. the intervening two sketches act as 'palette cleansers', drawing the listener back into 'real time' by exploring how 'artificial' (computer generated or manipulated) sounds react in real spaces. despite its conceptual premise, the 'esr' EP is a truly ambient recording - one that can be enjoyed in superficial and deep listening modes alike, thus tending perhaps more to the 12k school of electronic music than say the more purely intellectual approach of raster-noton. nevertheless, no previous knowledge of the genre or concept is required to enjoy the release. duncan o ceallaigh, of scots-irish descent but based on the baltic sea coast of germany, played in dublin during the nineties with various indie bands. he has spent the last few years in germany, initially in the west and since 2003 in the east, developing several projects spanning an experimental singer songwriter / post-rock project, theatre music and electronic music, as well as producing local artists. in addition, he works as a graphic designer, and has published a book of his landscape photography, subsequently exhibiting it. |

Aleph-1 is a project by carsten nicolai aka alva noto / noto. aside from his sound works under those pseudonyms, aleph-1 is electronic music with an acoustic sound aesthetics that was especially developped for the IDEAL Recordings label. The concept of aleph-1 derives from the theories of the mathemtician Georg Cantor, who was teaching in halle, germany, a city, to which Nicolai is deeply connected with through his family. The sound pieces of aleph-1 deal with the idea of infinity in terms of structure and length. Without actual beginning or end, they fade in and out. The pieces have a very logically constructed nature of overlapping tracks, which seem to be never the same thus could be extended into infinity. The album consists of eight rhythmic circles, based upon acoustic material, at first sight very minimal but always carrying pulse and melody. Music you can loose yourself in. For a deeper knowledge of the term aleph-1, here's a short definition: 1884 the term alpeh-1 was introduced by Georg Cantor into the mathematical world. Since then the first letter of the hebrew alphabet, combined with a number has been used to represent the cardinality (or size) of infinite sets. the aleph numbers differ from infinity (8) commonly found in algebra and calculus. Alephs measure the sizes of sets; infinity on the other hand, is commonly defined as an extreme limit of the real number line, or an extremal point of the extended real number line. While some alephs are larger than others, 8 is just 8. |

<falte> is methodically based upon a technique invented by the surrealists entitled «exquisite corpse». A method by which a collection of words, images or sounds are assembled collectively in sequence, either by following a rule or by delivering and making visible the «ending» of what has been created previously. This procedure has a resemblance to an old parlor game entitled «consequences», in which the players write alternately on a sheet of paper, fold it to conceal part of what they wrote and pass it on for further contribution. |

| This new release from BG Nichols (aka Level - Si_Comm) is a fascinating and very beautiful exploration of ultra-minimal micro composition and deconstruction. Having discovered a recording of a Ralph Steinbruchel live set entitled 'Box' he set about getting permission from the artist to rework the pieces from the CD in his own inimitable style. Packaged in a plastic wallet with a set of 4 postcards featuring some rather nice minimalist artwork, the audio content is a re-imagining of the source material using electronic processing to add layers of depth and sparse beauty to the original. Strictly minimalist, the work is a series of beautifully cultivated layers and rhythmic elements that sits somewhere between his micro-fine high frequency work as Si_Comm and the more lush melancholy ambient sound of his Level project. The effect is strangely soothing, yet has enough edge and background layering to reward thorough listening. That said, however, there's a real ambient overtone, particularly to the first track, 'Knot 3' and this gentle way of easing the listener into the CD pays dividends. By the time you reach 'Knot 2' you're greeted by an altogether more rhythmic and angular piece of work that, once again, manages to retain a calm and hypnotic feeling whilst dislocating you with off-kilter drops and stutters. The underlying drone is a thing of great beauty and accentuates the overtly a-tonal sound that plays across in tandem with the rhythms. The final track, 'Knot 1', is yet another superb example of depth in drone. A pulsating and, no doubt speaker shaking bass rumbling bottom end collides with a menacing series of foreground tones that, at times, seem to be trying to communicate with you. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there's a hint of manipulated vocal in there somewhere. Sci-fi minimalism with attitude and the sort of oceanic depth and subtlety that fans of Richard Chartier, Line, Raster Noton or NVO will be extremely pleased to hear. Really a fabulous release. |

| "Rolf Julius is a Berlin based sound composer/sculptor, born in 1939. He has produced a series of installation sound-exhibits, which have been documented on 4 self-produced CDs (we now have all 4 available, distributed by Edition RZ). He refers to his music as "small music" utilizing collage, abstract environmental sound acoustics, and a flair for beautiful, subtle, shifting layers of sound. Klangbogen (Small Music Vol. 2) features a crinkled array of pulsing, chirping environmentally-tinged sound - gravitating somewhere near the vortex where the Het Apollohuis artists, Selektion crew and Bill Fontana never quite meet. "Rolf Julius is a German artist who is interested in making connections and creating interactions between disparate elements that seem to have little relationship to each other. He works with sounds to 'create pictorial space and with pictures to create musical space.' He tape-records everyday natural and man-made sounds and mixes them to produce a sound piece. Julius' drawings and sound pieces, while in totally different media, seem to arouse the same aesthetic response. Using simple shapes and everyday sounds, his works in both media are quietly powerful. Describing Julius' work, a critic said it had a Zen-like sensibility in his appreciation of simple natural sounds and the elegance of simplicity. This Zen-like feeling is also evident in his ink drawings, which bring to mind the deceptively uncomplicated yet forceful ink paintings practiced by Zen monks. Julius' drawings are ostensibly of the electronic apparatus and objects that he uses in his sound installations. However, they transcend the category of preparatory drawings." |
