Staalplaat

Artist: Staalplaat Soundsystem
Title: Yokomono 2
Label: Staalplaat
Format: LP transparent vinyl
Cod. nr. STLP010

This is the second Staalplaat Soundsystem LP made for Yokomono. On one side of this record the Staalplaat Soundsystem has made 55 loops of digital silence. The deterioration and damaging will generate the sound. Vinyl live so to say. For the other side we have invited 11 other artists to make each 5 loops: Anton Nikkilä, Carl Michael von Hausswolff, Charlemagne Palestine, Christian Fennesz, fm3, Ignaz Schick, Ilpo Vaisanen, Justin Bennett, Phill Niblock, Radian and Tim Hecker.

Yokomono is the Staalplaat Mono Erosive Surround Sound Installation. The present setup consists of 10 vinyl killers - toy car record players, each customised with its own fm transmitter. The sound will come through a set of radios that receives the signal transmitted by the vinyl killers You might think Yokomono is just a DJ set with 10 turntables, and in a way that is correct but in many more ways Yokomono is completely different. First of all; each killer is mono and has poor sound quality, but much more Yokomono is very hard to handle, you can not really select a track or make it stop when you want to, its more putting the needle down blindfolded. The real difference starts when you realise each killer runs on batteries, meaning the speed is unstable and it will slow down during the concert, the fact that the batteries run out will not only effect the speed but it will effect the fm frequency that the killer is transmitting too, making Yokomono unstable on different levels. The fact that we transmit with 10 fm transmitters at the same time means that each transmitter is effecting the other. These interferences and the unstable media that are transmitting makes the whole set unpredictable and hard to control, making Yokomono unique and adventures.
Yokomono exists in two main versions:
For the installation: we bring over two hundred radios. As each killer will play its own record (locked groove records made by us for the installation) it opens up a separate audio stream. We thereby generate and control a 10-channel sound system. By arranging the radios in 10 groups it becomes possible to explore the architectural dimensions of the space. Some radios are tuned to the same frequency, here we use small battery operated radios on sets of the train models to map the transmission in the space, for it will drive in and out the interfering frequencies.

Former :zoviet*france: member Robin Storey continues his probing of the techno-tribal interface under the pseudonym Rapoon. Vernal Crossing is more concerned with the exploration of esoteric rhythmic structures than the previous Raising Earthly Spirits, but it's still long on atmosphere and experimentation, and every bit as fascinating. Storey combines the cut-and-paste sound designs of his former cohorts with the modes of Hassell, Roach, and mysterious, far-flung cultures in the realization of these multi-faceted works. As "Bol Baya" whips itself up into a frenzy of futurist gamelan and whispery electronic underpinnings, Storey then changes gears and abruptly enters a Middle Eastern / William Gibson twilight zone with "Dahina ta" or travels along a dirt road of tape loops and struck percussions during the surreal "Anatapurrah". Gauge your acid drops as you embark on Rapoon's hallucinogenic excursions. (Darren Bergstein - i/e Magazine No. 8)

The original concept for my 'Skate' LP was to make a record that usurped the deterministic spiral (and the 'anti-skate' mechanism) as a way of playing and listening to sound on vinyl. To do this I developed the 'Fragmented' cutting technique, a method of cutting a concentric collage of individual short 'sound scars' onto the disc. When played, the stylus navigates it's own random path across this intermittent terrain of physical/sonic diversions. The type of record player, its speed and the user will all affect the result and thus each and every playback of the LP will elicit a different composition.
After much research it proved unfeasible to experiment in a professional cutting room to develop this process. I decided then to build my own lathe by converting and inverting the acoustic sound reproduction mechanism of an HMV wind up 78rpm gramophone. Using a car stereo system I positioned a pair of speakers so that they played 'backwards' into the sound funnel and thus ultimately back into the stylus. The stylus then acted as a vibrating cutting head when enough volume was applied. A 14" blank acetate was placed on the turntable and rotated at varying speeds using the gramophone's sprung mechanism. By very quickly and placing the stylus/cutting head onto the disc I built up the final collage sound by sound. I used the collected works of Pierre Schaeffer (a pioneer of vinyl manipulation) for the source sound. Only a proportion of each sound scar was influenced by those specific vibrations as this rudimentary cutting process was one of loss and accumulation.

The LP is intended to be the starting point for 'real time' explorations by the user. It works very well as a repetitive device if you place an obstruction (like a 7") in the path of the tone-arm as it locks the stylus into a loop. Another method is to play the record by just using your hand to rotate it slowly instead of at 33 or 45. This produces a much more subtle and controlled result. My personal favourite is to use the Tri-Phonic or Twin to play several sequences simultaneously! As the LP travels at a fixed speed all the arms play at the same tempo and thus 'polymix' perfectly. Experiment with it.

'Rink' is a composition using sounds sourced from the LP combined with live room recordings taken from the 'Skate' Installation. Firstly, 60 different rhythmic and textural sound events were recorded by playing the LP on the Tri-Phonic Turntable in different ways. 30 silent tracks of varying lengths were then added to create a master CD. A copy of this CD was then loaded into 3 CD players and broadcast together in random mode and recorded to disk. A copy of the installation recording was then added and the result was then melded 'on screen'. 'Rink' was composed in spring 2002 by the invitation of Staalplaat. The 3"CD has 99 track marks for added flexibility. Have fun!

This is the second release on Staalplaat's atmospheric music imprint 'Container Music'. We are proud to present two of Germany's most interesting and talented music makers. Both of these musicians have a background in techno, house, ambient and serious avant-garde music.
"micropossessed" is a project conceived by the frankfurt based musicians "Eyephone" and "Atom Heart", both known for their works in the field of electronic sound.
"Eyephone" is known for his releases "Reductive" (CD album 1995), "Evergreens" (CD album 1996) and "Greenhouse e.p." (12inch 1996) (all on Hypnotism) and Atom Heart who released material under many diferent projects since 1990 ("pure function" & "larger than life", 12"s 1993 on After 6am), "atom heart and pink elin live (1993 on Rising High). "Morphogenetic Fields (CD 1994 on Rough Trade) and "Shellglove" (CD 1996 on Recent Programmings).
Got together in the summer of 1995 to start on their collaboration project entitled "micropossessed". The music was layered in various sessions and completed one year later, in the summer of 1996. The basic for sound generation consists of audio feedback made by M. Behrens between 1990 and 1995. This material was then re-sampled and digitally modified to enhance its specific microrhythmic qualities. Those highly abstract audio textures were composed to create different atmospheres ranging from reduced rhythmic ambient via elaborated funkyness of the percussive "micropossessed" cracks to the cyclic interferences of "microcycled" which is the coda to the entire composition. The concept used in the processing of the audio material was adapted for the manipulation of several video screenshots. Parts of these low resolution image files were magnified and used as cover artwork to reveal their microstructures. Both, the music and visuals cohere to form this conceptual masterpiece.
